Cancer occurs all over the world, and Serbia is
no exception. Incidences of certain types of cancer may be more
frequent in certain areas of the world for reasons that may or may not
be understood. Nevertheless, all around the world, one person in three
will be stricken with cancer at some point in his or her life. There is
no vaccine and no immunity. The best ways to avoid or survive cancer
are prevention and early detection.
Data provided by the Department of Epidemiology at the Institute of
Oncology in Sremska Kamenica for the year 2000 show that the most
frequently occurring cancers in Serbia are lung cancer, stomach cancer
and colorectal cancer for men, and breast cancer, cervical cancer and
lung cancer for women. The specific data may change from year to year,
but the general facts are clear: incidences of cancer are continuing to
increase, and the mortality rate is very high. |
