Woman, 44 (with
breast cancer, under
treatment)
When cancer strikes you, it takes a lot of courage and desperation to
pick up the phone, call a support service, and pour your soul out to a
stranger – a stranger whose sole job it is to listen to you and
lend you understanding and comfort. When you begin that conversation
with a lump in your throat from crying and end it smiling … need
I say more? You just feel deep down that that person - and that service
- is exactly what you needed, and that they really do care about you.

Man, 62 (with colon
cancer, under
treatment)
Men are not very good at asking for help. But when trouble comes, like
cancer, it's time to forget about your pride. You just pull yourself
together and head for the support service, mortally afraid for your
very life. And then you're met at the door with a smile. And even
though you just keep pouring out your pain and troubles, that
comforting smile never fades. What more could you ask? They certainly
can't solve your problem, but as you talk, you learn what choices you
have. And don't have. The trouble is still there, but suddenly it's
easier to bear.
